Sanddabs in the Winter

Ghost took the first sanddab and crab trip of the year and it was a great success! Captain Aaron Orsini and 3 clients went for sanddabs on Sunday, February 24th and came back with limits of crabs and 103 nice grade sanddabs and 2 petroli sole. The weather was fantastic with very calm seas and light breezy south winds the drift was very comfortable. This winter has been marked by many smaller storm systems (and a couple larger ones) hitting our part of the coast but in between the bad weather has been beautiful weather. We started the day running about 8 miles west where we stopped and made one long drift. The sand dabs took squid on sanddab rigs from the Outdoor Pro Shop. We also had a lingcod hitchhike on a sanddab all the way to the surface, which is a great sign for the upcoming bottom fishing season (opening on April 15th). After taking a few photos we encouraged the lingcod to let go and swim away.

After the group tired out of reeling up a ton of sanddabs we headed in shore for crabs. We pulled 6 traps for limits of very full good grade crabs. After which we stopped to watch a grey whale migrating south. We returned to the dock in good spirits and with a great hall.

Hope to see you on the water soon. If you want to book your trip or ask us what is biting give us a call at (707)971-0847 or email svamarinecharters@gmail.com.
